Reflections From The Bible And Life

Pay Your Taxes!

Deuteronomy 10:12-22; Psalm 147:12-20; Matthew 17:22-27

In the bible readings that I had today, Jesus clearly lets us know the difference between man’s obligation to abide to human laws and obligation to God. While we may be diligent in paying our taxes, it doesn’t really matter much to God as man’s laws are just man’s laws and not from God. Jesus asked his disciples to whom should a king receive his collections of taxes from, whether from his own children or from others. Of course the answer was from others. Why would the king burden his children?

When we receive money, we all know that it is a blessing from the Lord. Since the blessing comes from Him, why should He pay taxes to man? However, He produced a miracle that produced a coin so that Peter could pay taxes accordingly. From the miracle He showed that his dominion was over and above that of man’s. So while he teaches us to abide by the law, He clearly lets us know that man’s laws are just man’s laws.

God provides everything that we need, even our payment for our human obligations.
