Reflections From The Bible And Life

We Are Helpless Without God

Exodus 3:13-20; Psalm 105:1-9, 24-27; Matthew 11:28-30;

Hermione (not her real name) has been really desperate to look for a priest, and I found out why. She had been trying to patch up her marriage with her philandering husband but to no avail. She ended up seeking comfort elsewhere and got herself pregnant with another man. Apparently guilt has been eating her up and she couldn’t take it anymore.

Getting involved with another man taught her valuable lessons: We shouldn’t entrust our problems to man alone, for any man is just as prone to temptations and sin as you and your partner. There is only one being whom you can rely on, and that is the One who made us in His image and likeness who has sent his only Son to save us and the One who has been guiding us all throughout our lives. The problem is we choose not to listen, as we are clouded by so many temptations and distractions in life that we tend to be too preoccupied with the things of this world and look at life as our own. We can’t hear His voice if we are distracted or preoccupied with life’s distractions.

The Israelites suffered gravely under the hands of the Egyptians, but when God saw them cry for help, He sent them Moses to lead them out of slavery. Men cried for a king, and God sent David and other kings to rule their land in peace. Jesus was provided to us for our salvation. So you see, God never stopped helping us. We just took Him for granted, just as the Israelites started worshiping Baal (a golden calf statue) many years after being liberated from Egypt. Men are quick to ask for favors but quick enough to forget and easy to find faults in others, when they can’t see their own faults.

I am glad that Hermione has realized that she is helpless and nobody can help her except God. You see, when we are humbled, that’s when we are best able to listen to what God wants to tell us. The floodgates of heaven open to us when we come in humility. God speaks to us through situations and through people around us. Faith draws us to the right people at the right place and the right time. When we recognize our limitedness and dependency to God and humbly ask for His help, He guides us to the right path. However, if we walk with proud hearts, we may never see what’s in store for us, no matter what we do.

You have to seek the Lord in humility and pour your our heart to Him and trust that He will deliver you from harm. It is only then that you will find peace within yourself.
