The Time Might Be Near
I feel sad hearing the news about Japan‘s recent devastation, and the possibility of other countries being affected by the quakes and the violent bodies of water that reacted from the quakes. I’m constantly reminded of the book of Revelation. We have had great earthquakes, hurricanes (such as Katrina, Noel, Felix, etc.), tornadoes, terrorist attacks, great fires, and plagues brought about by swine flu, bird flu, AIDS, ebola virus, dengue, bubonic plague, SARS, cholera other epidemics, floods. Actually we have more diseases now than tens of decades ago, and the diseases are mostly new and deadly. The world also experience a global economic crisis almost close to depression. Could it be the sign of the times? Perhaps we should already prepare ourselves for what is to come.
We certainly don’t have the answers to these visions of St. John, but what I believe is God is all good, all knowing, and that I shouldn’t question His wisdom and goodness, as He taught us not to judge one another lest we be judged. In my opinion, in His greatness, He gave Lucifer the freedom of choice as well. He knows that there will eventually come a time when the evil one will attempt to rise in power.
Based on what St. John wrote:
In God’s hand is a scroll with seven seals (Revelation 5:1). The author weeps when nobody can be found to break the seals, but is reassured when a lamb appears who is able and worthy to do this (Revelation 5:3-5:5). The lamb appears as slaughtered yet standing , and has seven horns and seven eyes (Revelation 5:6). The lamb is commonly seen as a portrayal of Jesus, who is the symbol of Lamb Of God.
As the lamb opens the scroll, from the first four seals come riders on horseback: a white horse, whose rider carries a bow; a red horse, whose rider carries a sword; a black horse, whose rider carries a pair of scales; a pale horse, whose rider is Death (Revelation 6:1-8).
The four horsemen of the Apocalypse — the Antichrist, the conqueror, rides on a white horse; War, on a red horse; Economic depression, on a black horse; and Death rides a pale horse, and hell rides with him. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are said to ride as the Antichrist rises to power. Also in Revelation, there are descriptions of angels, but the angel there can be an angel of death, carrying plagues. There is also a description in Revelation 8 of what appars to be an asteroid or comet hitting earth, destroying much of life on earth.
With the fifth seal the apparitions of the martyrs appear before God and ask when he will judge the people of Earth. They are each given a white robe, and told to wait until more martyrs have been killed (Revelation 6:9-11).
With the sixth seal there comes a terrible earthquake, the sky becomes black, and the people of Earth are afraid of the anger of God and the lamb. Four angels stand at the four corners of the Earth, and hold back the winds, while another angel commands them to wait until 144,000 descendants of Jacob have a seal put on their foreheads. A large crowd, too massive to count, is then seen before God and the lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches. In turn, they worship God, and the author is told by an elder that God will protect and provide for them (Revelation 6:12-7:17).
When the seventh seal is opened, heaven is quiet for about half an hour. God issues seven angels each with a trumpet, then another angel carrying a golden censer comes before the throne. After offering prayers and incense to God, the angel fills the censer with fire from the altar, then hurls it at the earth, resulting in earthquakes, thunder and lightning (Revelation 8:1-5).
The book of Revelations goes on for more, but I’m not gonna dwell into it much since I’ve already mentioned the gist of my message. Perhaps what we can do is prepare for the Lord’s coming, or in other words, make sure we are on His side when the time comes.
