Sirach 36:1,4-5,10-17; Psalm 79:8-9,11,13; Mark 10:32-45;
Many of us aspire to be leaders in this world. However, Jesus teaches us that for us to be leaders in His world, we have to serve others. Humility and genuine love for others are the key to being leaders in God’s kingdom, and only God picks the leaders. We should aspire for that leadership.
Haruka Nishimatsu, CEO of Japan Airlines, is one of the very few people who understands what God’s servanthood means. He eats in the same cafeteria as the common employee, cut his own pay rate to that which was lower than pilots, and commutes to work. He did all these to help Japan Airlines survive and to make sure that he’s not the reason why Japan Airlines is not making enough money. Instead of firing employees who have high pay rates, he doesn’t fire any. He just cuts their pay rates just like his. Now that’s a servant with leadership skills.
